Perfume was first created in Historic Egypt, in the type of resin fumes sent to the gods. However it was later reborn within the flower fields of Grasse, the fashionable cradle of perfumery.

The celebrity of Grasse develops through the Renaissance, because of the tanneries. Though leather-based gloves have been very trendy on the Courtroom of Versailles, their highly effective odor was unpleasant. The tanners then had the thought of immersing these skins in baths of rose, lavender or verbena essence, from native cultures, to impregnate them with musk, civet or balms.

In the wake of Catherine de Medici who had launched herbaceous waters in France, perfumed leather-based gloves turned extremely popular at courtroom. This trend led King Louis XIV to formally identify the tanners “Grasp Perfumers and Glovemakers” within the 17th century. This was the beginning of a prosperous period for these trades as well as for the town of Grasse, now well-known for its rose, jasmine and tuberose crops.

If robust and animal smells have been in style underneath Louis XIV who not practiced bathing, the following century marked a return to hygiene. It was time for brisker, more flowery and refined scents. Although the 18th century was affected by the financial disaster of the leather-based business, the activity of the grasp perfumers and glove makers of Grasse flourished with perfumery.

The cultivation of crops in Grasse remained flourishing until the 1930s, however then regularly declined. Numerous plots of land meant for perfume production have been bought in favor of the more lucrative real property business.

Partnerships with local producers by Chanel within the 1980s, and more lately by Dior, revived the business. Grasse’s perfume-related know-how was listed as a Unesco World Heritage Website in 2018. In recent times, the town has once more attracted luxury brands in quest of authenticity.
