UMBRELLA HOUSE A NEW HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE ON THE VITRA CAMPUS

Well-known for its extraordinary architectural park, the Vitra Campus inaugurates a third iconic building, the Umbrella Home, designed by Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara. Inbuilt a district of Tokyo in 1961, this masterpiece was acquired by Vitra to protect it for posterity. Rebuilt identically on campus, the “Umbrella Home” is a testament to Shinohara’s early type. A house impressed by the normal architecture of Japanese personal residences and temples. The result is a single-story picket building with a pyramidal roof and a clear interior. It was an revolutionary contribution to the architectural revival of Japan in the 1960s, and right now evokes the designers of tomorrow.
